Cassava Growers in Cross River State are in talks with
relevant stakeholders to find ways of using ethanol extracted from
cassava as an alternative to petrol.
The Cross Rivers State Chairman,Nigerian Cassava Growers Association (NCGA), Mr. Augustine Oqua, said this in Calabar, noting that ethanol could be used in various ways.
Oqua added that with Cross River as the largest producer of cassava in Nigeria, ethanol could serve as its biggest revenue source.
He said, “Ethanol is a finished product of cassava. Ethanol is being used to drive cars as an alternative to fuel in many advanced economies of the world.
“Cross River has a comparative advantage in cassava production and we are working on how we will be the first state in Nigeria that will use ethanol to drive cars.
“Already, we are negotiating with the Cross River University of Technology and other research organisations to facilitate this process.”
He said that apart from fuel, ethanol is used to manufacture various products, including cough syrup and rubber products.
Oqua stressed the need for both the state and the Federal Government to encourage cassava farmers by giving them necessary inputs and soft loans.
He described the proposed cassava plant at Obudu by the state government as a good idea, adding that the plant, when completed, would facilitate increased production of cassava in the state.
