An Award to a Performer, A Reflection on Ogun Agriculture






Only did we know that an award of excellent performance as the (Best Governor) of the year in Agriculture was on the way for His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun when our editorial titled ‘ Agriculture: The need for Southwest Government to wake up’’ alluded to the positive direction the Ogun State government was already tolling to change the narrative, especially in the outgoing year that is generally believed to be ridden with food insecurity and turbulences occasioned by Covid-19 pandemic, climate change challenges and insecurity generally.

NAQS asks breeders permit for exotic seeds


The National Agricultural Quarantine Services (NAQS), head of station in Ibadan, Mr. Olufumilayo Akindele has demanded permit for the exotic seeds imported saying dangerous diseases into the country must be avoided through observation of this protocol.

The new Director General (DG) of National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Prof. Abdullah Mustapha has described unacceptability of people to new scientific innovations emanating from genetically modified crops as just mere exhibition of phobia which can only be eradicated by continuous enlightenment and education towards a better living.

NRCRI woos seed companies to market newly released yam varieties


A yam breeder doubled as coordinator for yam research program, National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike, Dr. Jude Obidiegwu has asked private seed companies in the country to take the potential advantages in the newly released yam varieties to the market places for the farmers and other end users’ benefit. Dr. Obidiegwu made this appeal after the official registration and release of the three different yam varieties by the National release committee chaired by Chief Oladosu Awoyemi at the conference room, National Centre for Genetic and Biotechnology (NACGRAB), Ibadan recently.

Editorial -Why we commend the cancelling of National Council on Agriculture Meeting


The recent cancelling of the National Council on Agriculture (NCA) meeting by its organizer, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture And Rural Development (FMARD) is a step in the right direction, considering the saving of scarce funds that would have been wasted and the fact that government listened to voices of reason (as many raised their voices to oppose the earlier  schedule for the meeting, viz December 16-18, 2020) saying the timing might not portend the essence and purposes such a strategic meeting was meant to achieve in giving agriculture policy implementation direction for 2021.

Committee registers two, releases 18 seed varieties


A total of twenty (20) improved new varieties among which were two hybrids cotton from Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Zaria, were registered and released by the National Committee on naming, registration and release.

FG cancels Agric council meeting for 2020


The National Council Meeting on Agricultural originally slated to hold in Abuja between 16th and 18 of December  2020 for policy implementation  has been cancelled by the Federal Government. This was publicly announced by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) Dr. Abdulkarid Muasu.

Lack of soil tests stagnates yield, says institute’s boss




Agricultural yields have been stagnated for decades because farmers fail to conduct soil tests before embarking on fields cultivation. This was voiced by the registrar of the Nigerian Institute of Soil Science, Prof. Victor Vincent Chude at the commemoration of the World Soil Day 2020 in Abuja recently.

Oyo farmers frown at Makinde's Agric policy, DG, Agricbusiness disagrees


The chairman, All Farmers' Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Oyo state chapter, Engr. Olumide Ayinla has described the agricultural policy by the state government as not beneficiary to farmers, saying how can an illiterate be asked to go online in order to get subsidized inputs.
