Wheat, 1.3 million Metric Tons projection is achievable says..LCRI ED

The Executive Director (ED) Lake Chad Research Institute ( LCRI) Prof. Baba Gana Kabir has argued contrary to some views that opposed the Federal Government's ( FG) projection of 1,250.000 million metric tons of wheat production per year towards food security.

Some stakeholders in the wheat value chain have raised concern over the Federal Government ( FG) wheat seeds imported for dry season farming in view of the recently released varieties by Lake Chad Research Institute ( LCRI).

Dry Season Farming: FG to cultivate 70,000 hectares of wheat

 

The Federal Government (FG) has announced that it will cultivate 70,000 hectares across the wheat production zones of the country with an expected yield of 875,000 metric tonnes for National Food Reserve.

Wheat: Lake Chad ED solicits FG, States/Local Govt support, commends FMAN


The Executive Director (ED) Lake Chad Research Institute (LCRI) Prof. Baba Gana Kirba has called upon the three tiers of Government to ensure the transfer of new improved wheat varieties recently approved by the National Varietal Release Committee ( NVRC)get into the hands of farmers in all the cultivating states of the federation, just as he commended the support of Flour Millings Association of Nigeria (FMAN) towards the crop productivity.

Breaking News: FG releases ten seed varieties

 



The Federal Government (FG) Varietal Release Committee (VRC) now chaired by Prof. Olusoji Olufajo has officially registered and released about (10) seed varieties from wheat, maize and potato for more food productivity towards economic empowerment of farmers with food surplus to Nigerians.

A researcher at the Lake Chad Research Institute, Dr.Turaki Zakari has said that the war going on between Ukraine and Russia as having negative effect on Nigeria’s import bill on wheat, the countries being major exporters of the produce to us.

Wheat: Varietal release stakeholders commend Jigawa Governor


The stakeholders at the recently concluded 30th meeting of the National Committee on naming, registration and release of crops, livestock breeds and fisheries varieties have hailed the support given by the Governor of Jigawa state, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar to the development of a particular variety of Durum pasta wheat called ‘’MBA-MAJA (GERARDO)’’ that has high potential to produce pasta like Semolina, biscuits and spaghetti.

Release of 2 Durum wheat varieties will enhance productivity

The Lake Chad Research Institute (LCRI) has presented two (DURUM) wheat varieties namely MBA-MAJA and ALTAR-84 as LACRIWHIT 12D and LACRIWHIT 13D respectively for registration and release for farmers’ cultivation to enhance the productivity of semolina and other pasta as food consumptions .

Bakers ascribe high wheat tariff, taxes as cause of increase in bread

The National President, Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) Mr. Ishaq Abdulkareem has said high wheat tariff by Federal Government (FG) and unchecked taxes across the states of the federation are the cause of hike in the price of bread with other confectionaries, just as he posited the inclusion of cassava and potato flours as a means to checkmate import bill expended on wheat.

Wheat seeds importation, not to under mind local production, says former ED LCRI


The former Executive Director (ED), Lake Chad Research Institute (LCRI) Dr.Oluwasina Olabanji has said that the recently imported 1,000 metric tons of quality wheat seeds by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and  Flour Milling Association of Nigeria (NFMAN) from Mexico  was not meant to spite the local varieties multiplication process , but rather to step up the wheat programme expansion towards increased cultivation from the present 250,000 hectares to 1.2 million in the country .
