Farmers warn politicians with votes

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria ( AFAN), Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) chapter, has promised to give their support in the upcoming presidential election to whoever gives more necessary support to food security and agricultural development matters.

This position was taken yesterday at the 2026 FCT Farmers' Day Celebration with an interaction investors' forum held in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of farmers in the country, the FCT chairperson, Mrs. Perpetual Okafor (PhD) said their votes are meant for leaders who are ready to give more support to farming and food security matters, adding enough of fake promises by politicians.l

Okafor expressed the dissatisfaction of FCT farmers with their own senator who never cared for farmers' well-being, saying she had only engaged with them once since her assumption into the office at National Assembly as distinguished Senator.

This particular experience according to Okafor has reinforced the need for political leaders to maintain regular contact with their constituents and demonstrate accountability through practical interventions, especially to farmers, stressing " We will only support those who support us with our votes"

The representative of Sen. Ireti Kingebe however appealed to farmers to give the senator another opportunity, assuring them that efforts would be made to improve her engagement with the group.

The senator representative also promised to communicate the farmers’ concerns to her boss, as she promised more cordial relationship that would ensure the regular visiting to monitor their activities.

Okafor urged farmers to wisely use their electoral power to determine the country's political leadership, saying their votes should be used to demand accountability from elected officials.

Other farmers who spoke with Food Farm News asked politicians not to take their support for granted, insisting that elected officials must demonstrate accountability and deliver meaningful results to earn their continued confidence.
