Tractors to Farmers: FG unveils new strategy

 

The Federal Government ( FG) under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ( PBAT) is planning a new strategy of giving farmers affordable mechanization services that will enhance food security.

This new plan was stated in a press release made available to journalists yesterday by the head, department of information, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) Mr. Ezeaja Ikemefuna.

The wife of PBAT, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu in the press release who was represented by the Vice president's wife stressed the need to make available mechanization services that will remove drudgery for farmers especially women and the youths in a very competitive price.

The statement described Agri360 as a strategic investment in mechanization where farmers can access appropriate machinery at an affordable price.

The statement said that a three-year initiative unveiled on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja, will provide training in agricultural mechanisation, digital agriculture, equipment operation and maintenance, entrepreneurship and agribusiness management.

It was also credited in the statement to the FMAFS Minister Senator Abubakar Kyari that Nigeria must move agriculture beyond dependence on physical labour and seasonal rainfall to a climate smart Agricultural practices.

“A farmer using a hoe should not be expected to compete with a farmer using modern machinery. A young Nigerian should not look at agriculture and see only physical labour" Kyari said.

The press release also quoted the Minister saying that " Mechanisation will enable farmers to accomplish in hours what could otherwise take days while creating new employment opportunities for machinery operators, technicians, mechanics, equipment managers and agricultural service providers"

He stressed further that the government's goal was not simply to distribute tractors but to establish a sustainable system where farmers could access the right machinery at the right time and at an affordable cost.

The Minister said further as stated that mechanisation must go hand in hand with irrigation and effective water management in order to achieve all-year food production.
