In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday, he said that “the Nigeria Customs Service is succeeding in curtailing the importation of poultry products through land borders as a result of which demand for local poultry products rose, causing a corresponding demand for more animal feed.”
According to him, “Nigeria was estimated to produce 3.8 million metric tonnes of animal feeds in 2014. The ALLTECH Global Feed ranking 2015 has ranked Nigeria’s animal feed sector as number 40 from number 51 out of 130 leading countries in the world.”
The statement revealed that the Nigerian animal feed production estimates are obtained from statistics computed by the NIAS, and made available to local and international organisations for planning and business purposes. The statement added that there was a significant rise in the livestock sector in 2014 and 2015, particularly in the aquaculture production and poultry meat sector. Oyediji said that the ranking is a significant progress, and added that Nigeria, through the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, is a member of the FAO/IFIF International Feed Regulators Meeting (IFRM).
In 2015, the NIAS statistics revealed that Nigeria hit 5.3 million metric tonnes of animal feeds with the following breakdown: egg 3,180,000; chicken meat 1,078,000; aqua culture 647,750; pork 265,000; milk 53,000; beef 41,250 while petfoods and micro livestock were 35,000 tonnes respectively.
He maintained that with a total of 5,300,000 meteric tonnes Nigeria is now rated as one of the world’s largest emerging animal feeds producers in the world with a better opportunity to penetrate the International animal feeds export markets.
