Nigeria Rallies Global Support for Youth, Women Farmers at IFAD Governing Council

Nigeria has reinforced its commitment to empowering youth and women in agriculture as the 49th Session of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Governing Council concluded in Rome.

The biennial gathering, themed “From Farm to Market: Investing in Young Entrepreneurs,” spotlighted the transformative role of young people in driving employment, innovation, and inclusive growth within global food systems.

During his opening remarks as the newly elected chairman of Ifad, Senator Kyari expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to lead with humility, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to improving the lives of rural women and men around the world.

Addressing delegates, the Chairperson stressed that investing in youth and women is key to unlocking economic potential, spurring innovation, and promoting inclusive development. He emphasized that strengthening their participation in agriculture would enhance food systems and accelerate progress in the fight against hunger and poverty.

Senator Kyari commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for prioritizing food security within Nigeria’s national development agenda. He noted that Nigeria’s leadership role at IFAD aligns with the President’s directive to boost agricultural productivity, expand opportunities for young people and women, and build resilient systems capable of withstanding climate and market shocks.

The Minister further applauded the IFAD Nigeria Country Office, led by Country Director Ms. Dede Ekoue, for effectively translating global commitments into tangible results for rural communities. He highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening value chains, supporting women and youth farmers, and enhancing the resilience of smallholder farmers across the country.

As the session drew to a close, Nigeria reiterated its resolve to promote multilateral collaboration in addressing hunger and poverty, underscoring its role as a proactive and responsible partner on the global stage.

Among the key highlights of the 49th Session was a Centre Stage conversation featuring IFAD President Dr. Álvaro Lario and leading African entrepreneur Mr. Tony Elumelu, who emphasized the catalytic impact of young innovators in revitalizing rural economies.

The conference also celebrated the critical role of women farmers in sustaining food systems, in line with the International Year of the Woman Farmer. Discussions further focused on urgent priorities such as water security and climate resilience, with renewed calls for strategic investments in irrigation and adaptive infrastructure to safeguard agricultural productivity amid growing climate challenges.

The outcomes of the session are expected to deepen international cooperation and accelerate investments that empower the next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs while promoting resilient and sustainable food systems worldwide.
