FG, IITA enter agreement on healthy soil management

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at improving soil healthiness through fertilizer efficiency application.

The statement made available to us by IITA Tolulope Oladipupo stated that the FG through its ministry of agriculture and food security have signed an agreement to ensure better management of soil through the implementation of regional hubs for fertilizer and soil health for West Africa plus the Sahel being hosted by IITA.

It was said in the release that the Director General ( DG), IITA, Dr. Simeon Ehui and the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi had both signed the MoU to effect commitment to sustainable agriculture and national food security.

The statement credited Dr. Ehui described the regional hub as a critical platform for advancing soil health and efficient fertilizer use across the sub-region.

“The Regional Hub is designed to be the technical backbone of soil health and fertilizer use for West Africa and the Sahel" said the DG.

Nigeria’s soil health initiative gives the hub strong political visibility and strategic relevance according to the press release.

The statement added further that the partnership would elevate soil health from a purely technical agenda to a political priority for enhanced hub's outputs.

Also the partnership is expected to accelerate the adoption of data-driven soil management practices, support farmers with more precise recommendations, and contribute to a more resilient and productive agricultural sector in Nigeria.
