The President of the National Cotton Association of Nigeria (NACOTAN), Mr. Anibe Achimugu has described Genetically Modified (GM) cotton in Nigeria as a failure, reason due to low yields and poor quality with cultivated land also being destroyed.
Anibe Achimugu in an interview on X space, said that " The GMO cotton failed. Farmers recorded lower harvest and quality compared to organic cotton. The land where we planted the GM seeds is completely destroyed. Local seeds cannot germinate there anymore."
Achimugu emphasized that " This is a national emergency. If our soils cannot support native crops anymore, what happens to food security?"
" We cannot keep gambling with farmers' livelihood and the nation's food security. We need to return to sustainable climate -resilient farming, and that starts with listening to farmers, and not corporations."
Most grateful to this realizations. Quarantine to any agricultural inputs are required. Research and evaluation of performance of new inputs introduced must be conducted and result announced to the public based on authority views and directive to adopt or otherwise.
