The Kebbi Government has commenced aerial spray of farm lands against quelea birds in Bagudo Local Government Area of the state.

The Deputy Governor, Alhaji Samaila Yombe, who led officials of the state Ministry of Agriculture to Bagudo on Monday, said the government would spend N58 million to conduct the exercise.

Yombe said the first phase of the exercise would cover Argungu, Bagudo, Zuru, Koko/Besse, Shanga and Dandi Local Government Areas.

He added that the aerial spray would subsequently be undertaken in the remaining 15 local government areas of the state, especially where large scale dry season farming would take place.

He explained that the aim was to prevent the quelea birds and other insects from destroying crops, and to improve yields.

The Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Agriculture, Alhaji Lawal Shehu, called on youths to embrace dry season farming to become self-employed and prosperous.

He commended the Federal Government’s new focus on agriculture, saying that it would enhance food security and the livelihood of rural dwellers.
