The Agric
Commissioner, Enugu state, Engr M.C.C Eneh has said it would be very
retrogressive to bring the old system of inputs distribution through government
procurement in the face of fighting corruption just as Hon. Munir Babba
Dungundi suggested the need for Growth Enhancement Support (GES) law for
effective operation thereby having a different position from Kaduna state
commissioner, Dr. Manzo Daniel Maigari who wanted the programme decentralized.
Speaking on
this issue, Engr. Eneh said that the involvement of the private sector in the
tractorization process has assisted in the resurrection of many of the abandoned
tractors which are given to private people at the local government levels
saying the exercise was able to save a lot of wastage's, pointed that Kwara
state did thesame without any problem.
The Enugu
state agric commissioner said that FG has no right to buy tractors and not
state should be involved in buying also together with any inputs thereby
reverting to the old corrupt system adding that his state has used Private
Public Partnership (PPP) to make the tractorization work effectively pointed
pineapple exportation would soon start in the state as about 100 hectares of
irrigation land for farming were already made available for farmers.
However, the
representative of the House of Assembly, Hon. Munir, Babba Dangundi pointed the
need to back the use of GES with a legislative act that would empower it to be
more effective just as National Seeds Council should be more empowered to work
effectively.
