The Directors of Fisheries of Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf Of Guinea (FCWC) |
As reported by the FCWC, the deliberations were aimed at
strengthening negotiating capacity for a regional approach to fair and
sustainable fisheries access arrangements in West and Central Africa .
The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of
Guinea (FCWC) currently has Benin, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria
and Togo as its member states: .
The six member states of the the FCWC decided to strengthen their cooperation at the sub-regional level within the framework of the Committee, given the regional nature of fish resources, latent conflicts in fishing and the weakness of national resources especially in monitoring, control and surveillance.
They also realized that none of these countries alone could satisfactorily solve the problems posed by the rationalization of their fisheries and conservation of fish resources in their exclusive economic zones (EEZ).
The FCWC aims to strengthen cooperation between Member States in the management of fish resources under national jurisdiction. The Committee plans to contribute to the harmonization of fisheries legislation in the sub-region and strengthening cooperation in monitoring, control and surveillance, particularly through the establishment of a sub-regional register of fishing vessels.
