As Nigerians prepare for the forthcoming Muslim Sallah celebration, many faithfuls across the country have expressed concern over the sharp increase in the prices of rams.
Traders and buyers say purchasing a ram this year has become increasingly difficult, as prices have risen significantly compared to previous years.
Findings revealed that the cheapest rams now sell for about ₦150,000, while larger sizes cost between ₦400,000 and ₦1.2 million.
Speaking with Food Farm News, a ram seller, Abdul Bello, attributed the price hike largely to the rising cost of transportation from northern Nigeria to major cities across the country.
“The major reason behind the increase is the high transportation cost,” Bello explained. “We buy the rams from Kebbi State, and moving them to the southern parts of Nigeria is now far more expensive than before.”
Another trader disclosed that transport fares had nearly doubled in recent months.
“Previously, we hired trucks for between ₦600,000 and ₦750,000, but now truck owners charge between ₦1 million and ₦1.8 million,” the trader said.
Many Nigerians fear that the high cost of rams may prevent several Muslims from fully participating in this year’s sallah celebration.
Checks conducted in some parts of the South-West, particularly in Ibadan, and Ilorin, Kwara State, showed that buyers now need at least ₦400,000 to purchase a fairly sizeable ram.
The Coordinator of Young Farmers in Nigeria (YOFIN), Abdulbasit Olatunji, noted that prices have increased considerably compared to last year.
“A small ram that sold for ₦150,000 last year now goes for about ₦200,000, while slightly bigger ones are sold for between ₦350,000 and ₦400,000,” he said.
A livestock trader in Ibadan Yusuf Agibade, also confirmed that anyone intending to buy a good ram for the celebration should budget at least ₦400,000.
Despite the already high prices, traders hinted that the cost of rams may still rise further as the Sallah celebration approaches and demand continues to increase.
