A cassava farmer counts losses

A cassava farmer has shared pathetic losses he incurred during the 2025 farming season as prices decrease daily.

This sad experience was shared by Mr. Adeoye Adeyinka who told Food Farm News how he lost all the money invested on cassava productivity in 2025 farming year.

Adeyinka explained how he had expended N200,000.00 on cassava production with another N270,000.00 to process into gari without being able to make a dime gain due to price depreciation.

He said that market prices for fresh cassava declined sharply, and  a strategic decision to process the harvest into garri also didn't yield any positive result.

The additional cost of processing and logistics amounted to ₦270,000, thereby bringing the total expenditure to ₦470,000 that was lost.

  1. A lot of people venture into business they've little or no knowledge about. The first thing an entrepreneur need to do is market research. Resesrch on base cost of production from other player's. Research on current market value of the finished product. Research on subsidies/grant that is available to help bring down cost of production. Research on past experience of 3-5 years market prices, which can help to predict future prices. If you have tp invest #200k pn an hectare of land to harvest an average yield of 30 tons, and the onfarm market prices per ton is #30k per ton, you're just going to sell at a break even price. What a smart entrepreneur will do instead is to study carefully how he can leverage mechanization to enhance productivity at a reduced cost.
