The African Seed Trade Association (AFSTA) congress for year
2018 which had since February 27th commenced has ended yesterday
March 1st as it is expected that the conference would have attended
to many priority areas of developmental needs in the continent in terms of
productivity of quality seeds and their movement across the Africa.
In his welcome remark at Cairo, Egypt, AFSTA President Mr.
Denais Zaranyika said that the congress would provide an interface for stakeholders
from different countries to exchange profitable ideas for progress in the sector
saying “the congress is expected to bring delegates from Africa and the rest of
the world who will actively participate to make it another successful and
unforgettable AFSTA congress”
Also the AFSTA
Secretary General, Mr. Justine Rakoto arisaona said that Africa is ready
to feed her people by all stakeholders working together to strengthen linkages
between farmers, regulatory organization, seed research Institutes, universities,
extension agents, private sector and policy makers.
Rakoto arisaona added that it an avenue for the private
sector to define strategies to work together with the different governments to
enhance coordination, and to develop long term plan to guide necessary
intervention, and to avoid duplication of effort to maximize the benefits from
synergies among the different stakeholders.
The object of AFSTA includes
1. Promote
the trade in quality seeds.
2. Strengthen
communication with African seed industries and the world.
3. Facilitate
establishment of national seed trade associations in Africa.
4. Provide
information on seed to members.
5. Interact
with regional governments and NGOs involved in seeds activities in order to
promote the interests of the private seed industry.
6. Promote
activities that lead to regulatory harmonization throughout Africa to
facilitate movement of seed.
7. Develop
a statistical database on African seed production and trade.
