President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ( PBAT) may have slated May 29 as a day to give farmers in Nigeria imported tractors to mark the second year in office, Food Farm News gathered.
The much-awaited promised tractors to ensure mechanized farming in the country, towards sustainable food, and renewed hope of Mr. President in food security matters have said to have finally arrived in the country under the supervision of the presidency according to our anonymous source from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security ( FMAFS).
Although the modality of how the tractors would be distributed was not very clear even to our source, who only mentioned the possibility of using the green imperative program, where designated centres for smallholder farmers may be used to distribute the tractors.
Our source said " Nobody in the ministry has a clear picture of how the tractors will be distributed by the President. We only hope that program like the Green Imperative, which is aimed to enhance food productivity value chains through the creation of Service Centres for agricultural and livestock production are used in the distribution process"
"These centres are designed to support smallholder farmers by providing access to mechanized farming tools, technical assistance, and market connections"
The source added "There is no particular plan for this distribution that I know aside from this green program that is known to us in ministry"
Farmers have however expressed concerns over how the tractors will be distributed saying the initiative was a potential turning point to the nation’s mechanized farming towards sustainable food security.
Farmers believed that the successful distribution of these tractors would have a profound impact on Agricultural productivity with more job creation in the rural areas.
They however cautioned against improper planning and execution saying that its negative consequences may hamper our food security now and in the future.
