Onion farmers in Nigeria have called on the Federal Government ( FG) to prioritize and sustain subsidies in the agricultural sector, warned that food insecurity could worsen if support for farmers were reduced.
This was said by the president of the Onion farmers, Aliyu Isa during a stakeholders meeting held in Abuja last week.
The farmers also advised the Minister, Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris to convey their concerns to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressed that subsidy for the sector should not be compromised.
According to the farmers, under no circumstances should policymakers advise the government to stop or reduce subsidies in agriculture. Investment in farming is critical to national stability and food security.
They argued that increased funding and subsidies for agriculture would ultimately reduce the country’s security challenges.
Also a member of the farmers said that “When you spend more in agriculture, you are going to spend less in the Ministry of Defence. It is as simple as that"
The farmers explained that hunger and food shortages often contribute to insecurity and social unrest.
