The Executive Director ( ED) Institute for Agricultural Research ( IAR,), Zaria, Prof. Yusuf Ado has expressed the need for more partnership synergy between National Agricultural Research Institutes ( NARI), saying it would enhance technologies' wider spread across the nation towards food security.
Prof. Ado speaking at the 36 edition of National Committee On Naming, Registration and Release of Crop Varieties, Livestock Breeds/ Fisheries last week, Thursday in Ibadan stressed the need to extend the newly released maize varieties for popcorn commercial production to the Northern part of Nigeria for wider spread and benefits to Nigerians.
According to him, " There is a need for more close working relationships among NARIs in order to achieve a wider spread of improved technologies in crops, livestock and fisheries for the use of farmers nationally to achieve sustainable food systems."
The ED thereby solicited that the two hybrid maize varieties from IAR&T for popcorn commercialization be extended to the North for wider benefit.
The chairman sub technical committee on crops, Prof. S Ado, agreed with the above position stressed he had long been saying this as regards yam production that the released improved varieties should be extended to the parts of the North where these crops are growing, like southern Kaduna and other areas through collaboration.
