High bread price contradicts claim of FG's food decline, says ActionAids

The ActionAid, Nigeria has called on the Federal Government ( FG) to intensify effort that will ensure the price decline of bread for Nigerians like other food items the government claimed are declining.

Mrs. Blessing Akhile, Youth Development, Gender and Program Specialist of the Action Aid, Nigeria said that the government's claims on food prices decline actually did not reflect on prices of bread that are sold for N2,000.00 per one loaf, saying that authority's intervention to reduce the wheat price through agro pocket inputs aimed at boosting local production must be intensified.

She said that "Despite reports that the general price of food items had  declined, bread- one of the most common staples food consumed by ordinary Nigerians remains expensive", and called for efforts toward boosting local production.

Akhile commended the National Agricultural Growth Scheme And Agro-Pocket ( NAGS-AP) initiative of FG which seeks to encourage local production, and reduce dependency on imports.

She acknowledged the expensiveness of wheat with the ripple effect of high price on bread, pointed that local production should be galvanized by government agro Pocket of FG.
