The Federation of Commodity Associations of Nigeria ( FACAN) has lent its voice to support a proposal seeking 2025 funding for tiger and bambara nuts development at all its productivity value chains.
Federal Department of Agriculture (FDA) in the FMAFS had in the last council meeting presented a funding memo each for Tiger and Bambara nuts against year 2025 based substantially on their economic values as supported by the FACAN national secretary, Dr. Nuhu Dogondaji who believed the two crops needed to be supported by the government with funding.
Dogondaji said that funding approval in this direction would strengthen the food security of the country, saying that the global health and wellness trend of the two crops to humanity is increasing daily with more economic earnings.
Tiger nut global economic value had been put at USD 917.28 million by 2028, and argument supports the need for Nigeria to catch on the demand opportunity to boost her economy just as Bambara has its economic potentials that needed to be properly tapped.
Also, Tiger nut is a tropical crop cultivated mostly in the Northern region of Nigeria including Sokoto, Taraba, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Katsina and Plateau states.
Bambara nut production was approximately 450,000 metric tons in 2020 with first position in Africa with major producing states including Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto and Kebbi.
