The deadly notorious bird disease known as Avian Influenza (AI) has again resurfaced in the country as some states have reported the outbreak experience that had led to the lost of birds and investments of poultry farmers.
This was stated in letter dated 3rd, February, 2021, made available to journalists, and signed by the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVON) of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), Department of Veterinary and Pest Control Services, Mr. Olaniran Alabi who called for speedy action against spread.
The letter has confirmed an outbreak in two commercial poultry farms in Kano state within one week, and another one being confirmed in Jos, Plateau state by National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) VOM Jos on January 29, 2021.
The letter further stated that in view of the devastating nature of the disease to the poultry industry with serious socio-economic impact on the livelihood of farmers and other poultry value chains operators, there is need to put in place proactive measures to curtail further spread of the disease.
Consequently the following are recommended in all states of the nation including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
1- Full activation of Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) in the state.
2- Enforcement movement control of poultry, and poultry products from affected to non-affected states.
3- Sensitization of poultry farmers and other value chain operators on basic bio security/hygiene measures for prevention and control of the disease.
4- Separation of Live Bird Markets (LBMs) for poultry from the LBMs for domestic fowls and other bird species such as ducks, captive wild water birds, Etc.
5- Sustained and vigorous disinfection of Live Bird Markets in the state.
