NAQS asks breeders permit for exotic seeds
The National Agricultural Quarantine Services (NAQS), head of station in Ibadan, Mr. Olufumilayo Akindele has demanded permit for the exotic seeds imported saying dangerous diseases into the country must be avoided through observation of this protocol.

NRCRI woos seed companies to market newly released yam varieties
A yam breeder doubled as coordinator for yam research program, National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike, Dr. Jude Obidiegwu has asked private seed companies in the country to take the potential advantages in the newly released yam varieties to the market places for the farmers and other end users’ benefit. Dr. Obidiegwu made this appeal after the official registration and release of the three different yam varieties by the National release committee chaired by Chief Oladosu Awoyemi at the conference room, National Centre for Genetic and Biotechnology (NACGRAB), Ibadan recently.
Editorial -Why we commend the cancelling of National Council on Agriculture Meeting
The recent cancelling of the National Council on Agriculture (NCA) meeting by its organizer, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture And Rural Development (FMARD) is a step in the right direction, considering the saving of scarce funds that would have been wasted and the fact that government listened to voices of reason (as many raised their voices to oppose the earlier schedule for the meeting, viz December 16-18, 2020) saying the timing might not portend the essence and purposes such a strategic meeting was meant to achieve in giving agriculture policy implementation direction for 2021.
Committee registers two, releases 18 seed varieties
A total of twenty (20) improved new varieties among which were two hybrids cotton from Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Zaria, were registered and released by the National Committee on naming, registration and release.

Lack of soil tests stagnates yield, says institute’s boss
Agricultural yields have been stagnated for decades because farmers fail to conduct soil tests before embarking on fields cultivation. This was voiced by the registrar of the Nigerian Institute of Soil Science, Prof. Victor Vincent Chude at the commemoration of the World Soil Day 2020 in Abuja recently.

These farmers will also be linked to inputs (herbicides, agrochemicals and improved planting materials), and guaranteed markets.
