FG may revise inputs subsidy for agriculture

This is an indication that the Federal Government ( FG) through its Agriculture and Food Security ( FMAFS) may have concluded not to embark on inputs subsidy to farmers just as delayed is already being experienced for the 2026 rainy season cultivation.

Food Farm News learned this through a close source to the ministry who preferred anonymity.

The source said that the government is giving the issue of subsidy on agricultural foods cultivation a second thought in view of the rising cost of items and other unforeseen fiscal constraints on budget allocation.

Although the source noted that no final decision has been communicated in this regard as he mentioned the proposed review would significantly affect farmers who are currently depending on government inputs' support to enhance productivity.

He said that "There are considerations around cost and other unforeseen factors. It is not yet final, but there are conversations about whether the subsidy system can continue in its current form"

Food Farm News as a follow up to this information gathered  from a separate reliable source within the ministry that there has been no distribution of agricultural inputs for the 2026 rainy season as at the time of this report.

The delay according to our findings has raised concern among stakeholders who fear it may affect the rainy season planting of small holder farmers who rely heavily on timely access to seeds, fertilizers, and other farm inputs.
