Varietal Release portal will reduce paper work, says NACGRAB Director

*Need for training

The National Agricutural Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (NACGRAB) Director, Dr. A. U. Okere has posited the need to embrace the use of Varietal Release Portal ( VRP) in the process of seeds commercialization in Nigeria just as the need for train the trainers was also suggested by the Chairman, Technical Sub- Committee on Naming, Registration and Release in Nigeria.

Okere stated this yesterday at the 38th meeting of the technical sub- committee on Naming, Registration and Release of crop varieties chaired by Prof. S. G Ado on Tuesday this week.

Dr. Okere argued that  the need for the use of portal to commercialize our varietal release would put us on the globe as many paper work will be eradicated with more awareness to the public especially the farmers.

Okere illustrating from numbers of attendees in the meeting to what is used to be some years back added that the next meeting on Varietal release would be on the portal.

However, Prof Ado solicited the need for National Agricutural Seeds Council (NASC) to take up the task of training the trainers at the research institutes level for better understanding of the use of the portal.

The NASC representative, Mr. E. J Zidafamor asked the stakeholders to present a request in that regard as he would represent the case to his acting Director General for approval.
