A three-year agriculture program targeting 400 farmers in Margibi County has been launched by the Association of Evangelicals of Liberia (AEL).The Jersey Project is aimed at empowering local farmers in Gibi and Kakata Districts.

Speaking at the launch of the project, AEL Program Officer, Ebenezer Binda said the project is designed to provide economic platform for local farmers in the two districts.

Mr. Binda said the 400 farmers will be selected from several communities by local authorities to participate in the project.

He said the farmers will be divided into 16 groups with each group comprising 25 farmers who will work jointly with two persons serving as supervisors during the project.

According to him, demonstration sites will be created for farmers to learn new techniques in agriculture before going into the field to start the process of actual farming.

The AEL program Officer disclosed that each farmer will be given basic agriculture implements to aid them in their agriculture activities.

The Jersey project according to Mr. Binda, will focus on the cultivation of rice and vegetables. He asserted that cash generated by each farmer will be used by them to continue their farming.

Also speaking at the launch, the Margibi County's agriculture Coordinator, Musu Young assured AEL that her office will do all it can to ensure the successful implementation of the procject.

Mrs. Young urged farmers who will be selected for the project to be steadfast and committed by making use of the opportunity provided them by the AEL.

For his part, Margibi County Inspector, Tarr Sackie commended the AEL for selecting the county for the project.

As part of the project, AEL will provide capacity building training to selected beneficiaries, such as agronomical practices, soil and water conservation.

It will also provide seeds for the demonstration sites of the project in the two districts.
