Apex council approves national commission for agric colleges, among others · Permits Minister to seek FEC approval for TETFUND support

The 2017 National Council on Agriculture and Rural Development (NCARD) under the steering chairmanship of the Minister, Chief Audu Ogbeh has approved about nine major proposals for action implementations for year.
Among is the approval to establish a national commission for colleges of Agriculture as the permission is given to the ministry to seek Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval to solicit for Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) for all colleges including cooperatives ones.

By this approval, the colleges of agriculture and cooperatives are to proactively reposition to meet the need of the Federal Government policy on commercial agriculture in terms of man power and cooperative farming arrangement that will enhance easy accessibility of government interventions to farmers as a group.

Also the council mandated the minister to present the funding case of agriculture and cooperative colleges before the FEC so as to be able to give directive to TETFUND as regards education funding to these institutions like others.

Other approvals included participation of specialized cooperative groups in mechanization business services, agro inputs delivery to farmers just as national action plan against highly pathogenic avian influenza with compensation sharing between the federal and states’ governments was approved.

Approval was also given to the ministry to embark on the use of electronic agricultural web portal (NeAWP) to enhance information coverage among stakeholders across the 36 states of the federation and FCT with implementation of the Financial Inclusion Scheme for Enterprises in the rural areas nationwide.

Also in the approvals are that FMARD should put in place action plan to check the incursion of pest in coconut, cassava, maize and banana with the promotion of information gathering on  agribusiness and investment in the rural communities across the six geo political zones.
