The Country Representative, SAA-SG2000 Prof. Sani Miko Ahmed has frowned at the many associations springing up among the Agricultural Practitioners of Nigeria saying a unified body would be more potent to fighting sub-standard practices in the sector.

Sani Miko’s resentment was coming on the heels of sub-standard practices that were hiking cost of production as a result of inefficient machines, equipment for processing and inputs adulteration hindering productivity of farmers without any stiff sanction to checkmate the unprofessional act in the sector, through a unified professional body like is found in engineering.

“Why must we have many associations within the profession of agriculture without adequately checkmating and ensuring standard practices that will give efficient productivity as engineering society only had one association? I have no apology for different associations, it will be better to operate under one umbrella to ensure best agricultural practices than having many councils without impact on standard practices. Who gives money to run these councils? We need to regulate unprofessional practices in Nigeria especially in agricultural sector. How many commissioners of agriculture in Nigeria in Nigeria have agricultural based knowledge? ”he lamented.

Earlier before the scientists and researchers at the 2017 IAR REFILs, SAA-SG2000 Dr Esther Ibrahim highlighted some of the challenges her NGO was facing in the course of transferring technologies to farmers as follows- weak farmers based organization, high cost of inputs, poor quality and adulteration of inputs, lack of affordable, efficient and reliable land preparation and planting equipment, and High banks interest rates.

She commended the support the organization had enjoyed from collaborating research Institutes saying “we are using this opportunity to say that our transferred technologies are originated from Research Institute like IITA, IAR and the rest”
