Timber workers in Kwara State have been implored to embrace the new policy of the state government in the replanting of trees to ensure sustainability of timber in the region.

The advice was given by the representative of the Acting State Coordinator of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Mr. Eneiga, at the Timber Workers Forum Union held at the Government Technical College, Patigi, Kwara State.

Mr. Eneiga, while presenting a lecture titled, “Danger of Deforestation: Causes, Effects and Control Strategies” highlighted the problems of deforestation as erosion, desert encroachment and climate change amongst others. Patigi is known to be rich with timbers of varying types which have economic benefits to the region and these timbers are being exported to different countries of the World.

However, many species of these trees are going into extinction thus the need for replanting which has been a major issue between the government and the Union. He therefore called for the cooperation of all timber workers in the region to promote a free and sustainable environment as climate change is becoming a global issue of concern and Nigeria is also affected.

Mr Ogunkoya Omotayo, a serving corps member in Patigi with State Code (KW/15B/1883), saw the need for this programme when he was posted to Patigi in November, 2015. Eneiga thereby appreciated Mr Omotayo for the noble initiative that made him to organize the programme in partnership with AgroNigeria, NESREA and others.
Mr Omotayo, while addressing the audience explained the reasons for the programme and hoped that the messages the timber workers have heard would go a long way to help them secure the future of their environment and also sustain the resources for their children.
