Let us incorporate organisms against excess fertilizers, says IAR Ed


The Executive Director ( ED), Institute for Agricultural Research ( IAR), Zaria, Prof. Yusuf Ado has called on plant breeders to harness the organic nature in micro organisms to checkmate excessive use of inorganic fertilizers on soil and crops production.

Prof. Yusuf Ado made this passionate plea before the National Varietal Release Committee at a meeting held recently in Ibadan sayings breeders in Nigeria should embrace incorporations of micro organisms into crops breeding so as to enhance organically the soil, and also to checkmate excessive inorganic fertilizer usage by farmers.

He pointed out that the organic importance of using micro organisms in the breeding process would give more nutrients into the new seed varieties for the use of farmers.

The ED said that as a student of micro biology of Nigeria, I want to implore our scientists and breeders to embrace the use of micro organisms into the improvement process of quality seeds production in the country. This will help to reduce the use of excess inorganic fertilizer on our soil and crops.

The chairman, Varietal Release Committee, Prof. Olusoji Olufajo commended the position of the IAR ED and totally agreed with him.
