The state coordinator, Federation of Agricultural Commodity Associations ( FACAN), Mr.Tarnongu Vitalis has commended a cowpea variety popularly called ALKAN SUPER for its great contribution to food nutrition in Benue state.
Tarnongu Vitalis in a private chat with Foodfarmnews, said the resilience work of Prof. Lucky Omoigui has been to produce this particular cowpea variety called FUAMPEA 5, saying that the unrelenting effort of the breeder from FUAMPEA 1, 2,3,4 had finally produced the popular ALKAN SUPER.
According to Vitalis every household in Benue state among farmers are asking for this ALKAN super variety to plant, saying that its high yield and stability against stress and striga were just exceptional, and reasoned for its acceptability and popularity.
"I have harvested this ALKAN SUPER cowpea in a hectare, getting 3 tons, which is about 30 bags of 100kg, because I was actively involved in the on-farm trials, which others like FUAMPEA 1,2,3, and 4 cannot give as yield. And I harvest twice a year."
