Why research findings may not leave the shelves..NAERLs ED

 

The Executive Director (ED) National Agricutural Extension Research Liaison Service (NAERLS) Prof. Emmanuel Ikani has revealed funding delay as a major cause of improved technologies not getting to end users.

In an exclusive chat with Foodfarmnews, Prof. Emmanuel Ikani said that lack of funds have hindered many improved technologies that are meant for farmers ending up at the shelves of Agricutural Research Institutes without achieving the essence of drought and floods prevention.

He argued that the funding delay has rendered many extension agencies in the states useless, saying how is it possible for information needed to be passed to farmers become possible without appropriate funding.

He pointed that both the states, local and federal government must all make funds available to information dissemination for better agronomics practices for food security by Farmers, adding that agriculture being on concurrent list must make provision for extension funding.

Ikani pointed that in as much as we continue delaying funding for Agric research and extension, farmers might not get access to improved technologies which might have over the years affect the output of our food industry.

He advised on the need to properly attend to food sector issues saying that " Until we fix agriculture, whatever we are fixing as a nation remains unfixed.  Agric is time bound. In the month of June money has not been released, research institutions are supposed to be on the field, doing research on the field, cultivating and monitoring. How can they do the research when there is no money? " He said.
