This mission statement was made on behalf of other NAFPMAN elected executives by the National President, Mr. Ohikhueme after taking oath of an office being officiated by the men of Federation of Agricultural Commodity Associations of Nigeria (FACAN) last week Thursday at the one of the conference rooms of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI), Abuja.
Ohikhueme who was full of appreciation to
the officials of the FMITI, FACAN and his fellow members pointed that the
leadership of the newly constituted national apple association has put together
a five year action plan that would reposition the productivity of the fruit to
ensuring more cultivations and consumption among Nigerians towards being an
economic beneficiary of the potential in the produce across the globe.
The elected president said that his
leadership would in the next five years through an implementation action plan
make apple fruit cultivations more pronounced in Nigeria to an extent that 90
people out of hundred will have known about its farming and fruiting with
increased consumption adding that backward integration strategy would be
deplored through rural farmers.
According to him ‘’ our goal is that in the next five years with
support of God Almighty, the FMITI and
FACAN, home grown apple fruits will be available on the street of Nigeria as we
are having mangoes today. And secondly,
if you interviewed 100 Nigerians now to know whether they have seen where
apples have been growing and fruiting, you may hardly get one or two people to
say yes. But in the next 5years, if you are interviewing 100 Nigerians, 90 of
them will say i have an apple farm. We
want to do backward integration as presently China is the highest producer of
apple on the globe, but they are not the highest consumers. USA is the higher
exporter’’
He applauded the good job done by
constitution drafting committee of the association, saying its effort had been
able to make useful corrections that ensued the adoption of the draft document
after the general assembly’s amendment under the chairmanship supervision of
FMITI Deputy Director (DD) commodity export department, Mr. S.O.G Twayeringha
just as he solicited for the support of all members towards achieving the ultimate
goal of commercial production and processing of the fruit for economic
generation.
Speaking on the occasion, the President of
FACAN, Dr. Victor Iyama who was represented by his National Secretary Alhaji
(Dr.) Nuhu Dogondangi encouraged the newly elected executives to work as a team
towards grassroot mobilization for more members across the states, adding that
the association must harness the opportunity in other government agencies for its
advancement and development with constant resort back to FACAN’s wise counsel.
