World Food Day: Farmers Appeal To Govt For Modern Farming Inputs

Yam Sellers Association of Nigeria, New Orange Market, Mararaba chapter in Nasarawa state and  farmers have appealed to the government to provide farmers with modern farming inputs and ensure timely distribution of fertilizers in order to boost food production in the country.


The chairman of the association, Alhaji Abubakar Ubalabour made the appeal while speaking with newsmen in Mararaba, Karu local government area of the state.

He said that food self-sufficiency is important for the socio-economic development of the country, adding that apart from food supply, it also improves the revenue generating base of the government and individuals.

“My appeal to the government as we mark World Food Day is for the government to provide modern machinery such as tractors and other modern farming inputs to the farmers at a subsidized rate in order to boost food production in the country.

“Provision of the modern farming inputs to the farmers will not only fight poverty, hunger, unemployment but it would also improve on the revenue base of the country, improve on the standard of living as well as the socio-economic development of the country, “he said.

Ubalabour has also called for a soft loan or free interest rate to the farmers in order to boost food production as well as ensuring food sufficiency in the market.

As we are all aware that no society can live comfortably, survive without agriculture, agriculture is the major source of lively hood of every family, nation and its importance can not be overemphasized to the development of any society,” he added.

He also commended Gov.Tanko Al-Makura for given top most priority to the agricultural and other sectors of the economy and called for its sustenance.

Mr.Bulus Anzaku, a farmer in Karu has called for a timely distribution of fertilizers to farmers in the state in order not only to boost food production but also to fight hunger as well as boosting the revenue base of the state and the country at large.

“Agriculture does not only provide food, fights poverty, hunger, unemployment but it would also improve on the revenue base of the country, improve on the standard of living as well as the socio-economic development of the country, “he said.

According to him, early distribution of fertilizers and others farming inputs to farmers will boost food production, fight hunger and poverty in the state and the country at large.

Another farmer in Karu, Ibrahim Galadima lamented on how majority of the farmers in the state are peasants, calling on the state government to provide fertilizers  and other inputs at affordable price in order to reduce their plights for the overall development of the country.

“Most of us the farmers in the state are poor, we can not afford to buy fertilizers and other farm inputs at the market price, that is why we are appealing to always government always to provide us with fertilizers and other inputs at affordable price and timely” he said.
