EU Commits $20m Euro To Great Green Wall Programme

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), has said that European Union has committed the sum of 20m euro to the implementation of the Great Green Wall programme in Nigeria and five other African countries.


Forestry Officer, FAO, Ms Nora Berrahmouni, stated this at the West Africa Regional Technical Great Green Wall Workshop, held in Abuja.

She said the organization also provides technical support to ensure that the funds are used in the best manner, with the best methodology and also to reach the local communities on ground.

In his remarks, FAO representative in Nigeria, Dr. Louise Setshwaelo, said FAO is supporting GGW programme because it is one of the most important African flagship programmes that aimed to reduce poverty and ensure food security.

Setshwaelo who was represented by Mr Rabe Mani, Assistant FAO representative in Nigeria, said the FAO’s solid experience and expertise in the key productive sectors is being channeled through the Action against Desertification (AAD) to support greater forest, pastoral and on-farm productivity.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Minister of State for Environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman thanked the FAO, EU/ACP for their support in the implementation of the GGW programme through the sponsorship of the AAD project.
