The effort of the past administration to diversify and reposition the country’s economy through the removal of import duties on agricultural equipment has been reversed by the Nigerian Customs Service, and this has led to high production cost with negative consequences on small holder farmers across the country.

The government has revived and restructured the Mozambique Grain Institute (ICM), giving it the power to coordinate agricultural marketing, the Minister of Industry and Trade, Max Tonela, told the country's parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, on Wednesday.

The application requesting Federal Government (FG) for the importation of ninety five (95,000) metric tons of crude palm and other affiliated finished products running to billions of dollars under the covers of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) by Olam Nigeria Limited, an Indian agro based company in the country may have hit the rock as major indigenous stakeholders have out rightly rejected the proposal saying all importers must pay the agreed 35% duty tax without ETLS exception that would short change the nation’s economy.

Despite the 4th December reconciliation meeting held at the National Assembly (NASS), the members of three staff unions at the Federal College of Agriculture, Moorplantation have demanded the removal of the school provost by the Federal Government (FG) as they expressed dissatisfaction for not being heard at the Abuja meeting chaired by the House committee on colleges of agriculture, Hon. Linus Okorie who reacted saying the illegality of the unions’ strike was the reason why all the parties were not allowed to talk.
