Gus Schumacher, food justice advocate and farmers market proponent, passed away at age 77.

Advocate, consultant, and farm hero Gus Schumacher passed away on September 24, 2017, of a heart attack at the age of 77. His long career began with helping out on the family farm in Lexington, Massachusettes. After serving in the government for many years, he later co-founded his own nonprofit called Wholesome Wave. Throughout all, he promoted food justice.

Researchers from the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture found in August that every formulation of the herbicide dicamba they tested—including Monsanto’s XtendiMax, BASF’s Engenia, and DuPont’s FeXapan—displayed volatility, or a tendency to blow away from the location it was originally sprayed. Some formulations remained volatile for up to 36 hours, even when proper application instructions were followed carefully.

He wasn't the only one, with many smallholder farmers in this district facing a four-month lean period year after year. It wasn't until he received training from an Aga Khan Foundation (AKF)-trained lead farmer that he learned how to farm sustainably and increase productivity.
