Farmers in Malawi seek seed sovereignty and crop diversity.

You wouldn’t have known from the farmers gathered in Lobi, in the Dedza area of central Malawi, that drought had seriously depressed harvests. To be sure, they hadn’t suffered the worst of the country’s devastating heat and dry spell. Farmers to the south saw crops wither in their baked fields; some never even bothered to plant. An estimated 8 million people – fully half the country’s people – are now at risk of hunger, according to the World Food Program.

Despite the global award given to Orange fleshed Sweet Potato ( OFSP) for its ability to mitigate hunger especially in Africa at the recent 2016 World Price Laureate, the Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has issued a letter of dis-engagement from her initial recognition given to this crop cultivation through a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Potato Centre (IPC) by official  termination through a letter convey to the office under the coordination of Dr. Peju Phorbee.

U.S. to Send Peanuts to Haiti Despite Controversy From Aid Groups

The USDA will send 500 metric tons of peanuts to Haitian schoolchildren later this year.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that the agency is shipping surplus American peanuts to help feed 140,000 food insecure schoolchildren in Haiti. According to the U.N. World Food Program (WFP), there are more than 3.6 million food insecure Haitians. The plan, however, is controversial and more than 60 NGOs—including Food First, Grassroots International, and the U.S. Food Sovereignty Alliance—are calling for its cancellation.

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has said that poor packaging and labeling of goods produced in the country is adversely affecting the export of the nation’s products.
