Institute for Agricultural Research ( IAR), Samaru, Zaria, has officially announced the winning of four different awards totalling N1.2 Billion towards ensuring climate-change-resilient agricultural practices in Nigeria.
The announcement was captured as " IAR scientists won four international research grants worth N1.213 billion to advance climate-resilient agriculture in Nigeria"
It was said in the announcement that the approval of these four climate-change-resilient agriculture awards was a result of the outstanding performance of the four scientists in a very competitive Action Research for Climate Adaptation in Agriculture (ARCAA).
The total grant value was put at $ 948,678.53 and which translates into Naira as N1,212,654,831.09
" Out of 149 concept-note submissions across the programme, only 14 were selected. Notably, IAR’s four successful projects account for 50% of Nigeria’s eight approved concept notes, making it the only institution in the country to secure more than one award"
" The ARCAA programme is a joint initiative of Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International, USA, and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), with support from the Gates Foundation"
" The four projects will address critical agricultural challenges through alternative livestock feed development, solar-powered irrigation, climate-resilient maize hybrids, and improved access to drought-tolerant groundnut varieties. Collectively, they aim to strengthen farmers’ resilience, improve productivity and contribute to national food security"
Both the IAR Executive Director, Prof. Ado A Yusuf and the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Prof. Adamu Ahmed have congratulated the four scientists and particularly the entire research and development team for the great work and achievement for the institute.
" This achievement further demonstrates IAR’s research capacity and its commitment to developing locally relevant solutions to climate change, declining agricultural productivity and food insecurity"
It was stated "Congratulations to the four Principal Investigators, their research teams, the Executive Director, Prof. Ado A. Yusuf, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, and the entire IAR and ABU community"
