The most recently released report by the National Bureau of Statistics ( NBS) shows a hike in food prices across the nation, with Benue being highly affected.
NBS June 2025 released report stated a hike in the index price of agricultural produce, saying it has jumped to 142.53 in May from 110.5 in January.
According to NBS, the increase was due to insecurity across the nation, which prevented farmers from being actively engaged in farming, which would have enhanced production for a food surplus. The consistency of the rise from January to May was also obvious.
In January, the price index read 110.5, while it increased by 1.77% to 112.46 in February.
Increased by 2.65 percent in March to 115.43, with a marginal increase of 0.88% in April to arrive at 116.46.
The increase became very conspicuous between April and May as the price jumped by 22.28 percent to 142.53.
NBS report attributed the surge in the food prices to the continuous insecurity disruptions to agricultural activities, adding that Benue state was worse hit with 51.8% food inflation yearly, and another 25.6% monthly hike in food prices in April 2025.
