The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Zamfara chapter has frowned over continuous activities of herdsmen and cattle rustlers against food security in the state.
Chairman AFAN, Zamfara state, Mohammad Brini Mogaji stated this on behalf of his members, saying the consistent herders' activities on farms destruction coupled cattle rustling have hampered food production in the state with few others in the north.
Magaji speaking with Food Farm News at the just concluded national livestock program, organised by Kano state Government in NAF centre, Abuja said that food crisis was as a result of cattle invasion of farmlands coupled rustlers activities that have shortchanged food availability as a result of limited animals' for ploughing, and also as means of transport to market places where food are bought.
He argued that peace in terms of security is a function of food productivity in commercial quantities saying the activities of herdersmen had endangered food in the major parts of the North.
Zamfara AFAN chairman commended some food security projects of the state government towards mitigating the impact of herdsmen and rustlers activities, saying other states in the north should replicate such projects for wider spread to enhance foods availability in the country.
Speaking on Ruga program, he said that it was designed to keep the herders in one place, adding that it would help to control animals' trespasses on farm lands.
He continues it would also help to keep herders in one place to ensure that their children are educated with provisions of social facilities in terms of schools, hospitals and markets.
Mogaji lamented on the huge amount of money being lost by the farmers to this crisis saying " in my village the ravages is so escalating, I tell you at the moment I virtually lost all my farms, and the funny thing is that some of the bandits have taken over the farms, so for you to really figure out the losses or quantify the losses economically becomes very difficult"
