The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) has trained both livestock farmers and feeds millers on how to use our own local materials for nutritious animal feeds at a very competitive cost.
The training was done in Gwagwalada as participants drawn from Niger, Nazarawa and FCT, Abuja were given free grains and other relief materials.Speaking on the occasion, the representative of the ministry's Permanent Secretary (PS), Mrs. Fawsat Lawal said the increasing cost animal feeds had forced many millers and livestock farmers out of business, saying the need for using local alternative sources become imperitive.
The PS. Dr.Ernest Umakhihe said that " it is with the realization of the strategic importance of the livestock subsector in the growth of our national economy that we are organizing this capacity building program to teach our feed millers and livestock farmers alternative sources available to them to provide nutrition feeds for their animals at minimal cost"
He added that the livestock subsector supports over one billion persons globally, accounting for over 40% of global agricultural GDP with provision of 35 percent of the world's protein intake adding that the subsector also played an important role in checkmating climate change challenges.
He urged participants to leverage on the training towards a new chart of the Government to ensure agriculture as business for wealth and job creations.
