Maize: Farmers move to crash price, plan to unveil Pyramid

The Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) has disclosed that the association is working towards ensuring that the price of maize is crashed across the country to meet the demand for consumption and industrial use, just as there are ongoing plan to unveil maize pyramid in Kaduna.

This was disclosed by the national president of the association Abubakar Bello.

Bello told journalist during an address that current production of maize haven increased to 20 million metric tons following the support by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Anchor Borrowers Program (ABP), will help to meet the demand for both consumption and industrial use. He said that farmers despite insecurity challenges faced by farmers, his farmers keyed into the Anchor Borrowers and produced more maize that will meet with rising demands from processors.  

According to him ‘demand by the poultry farmers is between 14,000 to16,000 metric tons and the current production is about 20,000 metric tons. There is enough to meet the demands of the poultry farmers and even for consumption purposes’.

He said that the unveiling of the pyramid will showcase the efforts put in by the maize farmers over the years to ensure that they meet with the demand of consumers, just as it is expected that the price of maize will further crash as it would stop maize merchants from hoarding the commodity, while making it available for ready processors willing to offtake from them.

The maize president pointed that the pyramid was to show Nigerians what his farmers were able to achieve despite the insecurity challenges in the country, as they are also able to pay their loans received under the ABP.

He stressed that the 30 years of existence of the association is worth celebrating, looking at the impact maize has made in adding value to the Nigerian economy is worth celebrating. He said.
