NIMET Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Prof. Sani Abubakar Mashi & Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika |
Effort to release the year 2020 Seasonal Rainfall Predication
(SRP) for the farming seasons preparation is already on top gear as Nigerian
Meteorological Agency (NiMet) may on 21st, January release the forecast
for the use of the public especially farmers. Food Farm News visits to NiMet office yesterday revealed this.
Although no official of NiMet is ready to say anything
concerning the SRP about to be released even at all our effort to see the Chief
Executive Officer (CEO) Prof. Sani Abubakar Mashi could not yield any result
due to his busy schedule, but we were told a press conference would be held
before the real event comes up next week.
The SRP release is very strategic to all facets of our
economy especially farming activities which requires weather forecast on rainfall
and other geographically related matter to food security.
Our correspondent, who was later told at the information unit
that the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika had inaugurated a committee
to review the impact of the seasonal rainfall, pointed that there are top notch
plans as regards the 2020 SRP which cannot be disclosed at the moment.
In the last one decade, an analyst who wanted anonymity has
also described the NiMet SRP as being accurate and good document for economic
planning against climate change disasters, adding that all departments and
agencies of the Government including farmers and corporate entities must be
ready to give yearly support to the agency for this forecast.
It will be recalled
that the last year Nimet’s SRP had been of imminent use for many farmers towards
their crops planting and animals rearing as it was predicted ‘’ lower-than-normal
rainfall will be experienced over most parts of Nigeria in 2019 with expected
late start of rains in the north, as the south-eastern zone and the coastal
areas would experience normal onset of rains.
