From Left-Prof. Sani Miko Ahmed in discussion with the Director General/CEO NiMet Prof. Sani Abubakar Mashi |
This he said would give effective productivity to crops all the year round thereby using the dams to capacity for food security.
Prof. Sani Miko Ahmed at the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) annual REFILS meeting held last week said that the merging of these two key ministries under one umbrella for food security planning would be more impactful to all the year round crops production using irrigation system from the dams
The SG2000 Country Director said apart from the domestic use of water under the ministry of water resources, much of the commercial of water usage would be more effective when deployed to crops production through irrigation that will ensure both dry and rainy season farmings.
This advocacy is coming on the heels of water closure for dry season planting experienced at Kano state where farmers incurred losses after planting due to scarcity of water occasioned by the Water Board.
According to him "Agric and water Ministries must be merged. The interest of agricultural productivity must always be first in the water ministry when it comes to planning. How can water board close the flow of water at the dry season planting in Kano against farmers who have planted for dry season" He thereby wanted the two ministry to be merged so that the food security planning would be well programmed by the two ministries.
It will be recalled that during the late President Musa Yar' Adua, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Water Resources were merged together under Dr. Abba Ruma as the Minister until it was demerged till date.
boast food security.
