The Federal Government wheat accelerated programme meant to checkmate annual billions of naira import bill in about ten states of the federation is graciously receiving special support of the Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Danguje as wheat farmers in the state have commended the governor’s spirited support to the development and production of the crop in the state.

Speaking with Food Farm News at the Madandu processing centre of the Association, the Chairman of Wheat Association of Nigeria, Kano state Chapter Alhaji Rabi’u Mudi who commended the Governor saying his complimentary support to the federal Government’s assistance has resulted in the first delivery of 1,500 bags of wheat to Nigeria Flour Millers as the second tranch would soon be picked up as cleaning was already on going.

Alhaji Madi said that the wheat success story would not have been possible if the Governor had not provided the processing centre adding that “we are commending the governor of kano, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje for the full support given to our members in area of loan at zero interest rate and provision of two cleaning machines for value addition”

Alhaji Madu said the Governor’s support to wheat production in the state has complemented the Federal Government’s desire to mitigate annual import of 25 billion naira as Nigeria flour millers are already picking up the farmers produce as promised in Kano.

Alhaji Madu said that “We are able to support 7,000 farmers in 2015/2016 with inputs such as fertilizer, improved seeds, chemical, tractor services, harvesting and water pump as our governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is the one that supported us with N100 million naira soft loan, a bank guarantee of 18.2 million naira to purchase wheat cleaning, sorting and grading machine. He also supported us with 20 million naira to purchase two combine harvesters. The governor did not stop there but also guarantee all our input vendors of fertilizer and other agro chemical. He also gave us this premises where we installed our machines at Magandu road, Kano. The state Governor also gave the10% to pay for the compact milling machine we got from the FG in the sum of 13.4 million naira. The wheat farmers association is thinking of milling our wheat into flour in the event where there is no market”

The farmers however advocated that the Federal government should intervene by bridging the production cost prices between the market and millers’ off take prices in a way that would cover all other logistic of farmers.
