The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Jigawa on Sunday urged the Federal Government to speed up action in transforming the agricultural sector.

The Chairman of the association, Alhaji Habibu Isa, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse.

Isa noted that government’s resolve to shift from oil to agriculture was a welcome development, urging it to expedite action in the transformation to achieve result.

He said since agriculture was a seasonal business, the government should do the right thing and at the appropriate time to earn a better result.

He decried government’s inability to provide sufficient fertiliser for dry season farming, adding that farmers in the state had to source the input at exorbitant price.

The chairman appealed to federal and state governments to provide farm inputs to enhance their production and called for all inclusive policy strategy that would involve the three tiers of government.

“There should be allocation of responsibilities among federal, state and local governments in the provision of farm inputs to farmers.

“Our governments often duplicate responsibilities leaving out the most important things unattended to.
A cassava farmer in Gwaram, Malam Adamu Kila, also urged federal and state government to provide farmers with inputs, stressing that subsistent farmers were being neglected. (NAN)
