As the
Institute of Agriculture (IAR) Bt cowpea is about to be officially released for
farmers in Nigeria, an expert in crops Genetically Modified Organism (GMO), Mr.
Okon Unung has described those who are opposed to it as lacking prerequisite
knowledge about plant breeding, saying one should endeavour to ask for their
background whenever they raise the issue.

(A) OVERVIEW
• Nigeria is predominantly an Agricultural society.
• Approximately 70% of the Nigerian population engages in Agricultural production at a subsistence level.
