The practitioners of organic farming in Nigeria have called on people to ensure eating foods free of dangerous chemicals.
This unanimous decision was taken in view of the high rate of unwholesome herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers application on food crops production coupled with the mismanagement of soil through the application of urea fertilizers that have turned farming land acidic.
Speaking at the 2025 National Organic and Agroecology Business Summit ( NOABS) held in Abuja this Tuesday, the Organic And Agroecology Initiate (ORAIN) Board of Trustees ( BOT) chairman, Alh. Abubarka Gotomo said that the conference must come up with a firm position against the increased uses of unwholesome chemicals on our foods and soils eco systems, pointing out that it was the only remedy to guarantee safety in terms of what we consume.
Gotomo emphasized the need for the promotion of organic farming towards an enhanced friendly Agricultural ecologies to the environment and healthy soil management for food security.
He added that ORAIN is ready to ensure availability of organic foods across all the geo ecologies through soil friendly farming for safe food availability.
The ORAIN BOT chairman commended the Minister of Agriculture, state, Sen. Sabi Abubarka for his concerns for good soil management in relation to food security.
Speaking on the occasion, the Managing Director/ Principal Consultant, Vertex Agro Limited, Mr. Daniel Gemana emphasized the need for more government support for organic farming saying their lip service attitude would not promote best agronomics practices for food security
Mr. Gemana emphasized the need for government to take organic farming very seriously so as to resuscitate our dead soil saying that " The distortion we have done to soil and the cutting down of trees is very much in the last two years with the excessive use of urea fertilizer on the soil"
The president, Federation of Agricutural Commodity Associations of Nigeria ( FACAN) Alhaji Sherif Balogun ably represented by Mallam Jubril Bukar of Sunflower raised the issue of a well defined road mark for organic farming in Nigeria saying the negative impact of unwholesome chemicals on our lands need to be given serious attention in view of healthy food consumption.
Sherif Balogun called on the summit participants to profer a solution that would reposition the unwholesome agro inputs chemicals proliferation in the circulation.
