FG approves dairy policy, to handover 13 milk centres...



The Federal Executives Council ( FEC) has approved the national dairy policy just as thirteen milk collection centres are said to be ready for hand over to private operators in six states of the federation.

This was officially disclosed by the outgoing Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Mohammed Abubakar during a press briefing held yesterday to celebrate World milk day at the ministry's headquarters in Abuja. 

Dr. Abubakar said that in line with best practices in the dairy value chain, the FEC had on May 10, 2023 approved a national policy to be used in order to become more competitive in the milk productivity as a nation.

He added that the approval has become very necessary to ensure a standard animal production nation towards milk productivity for human consumption, adding that the approval process had gone through constructive reviews and recommendations.

The Minister said  ‘‘I am also happy to inform you all that the Federal Executive Council has approved the national dairy policy for Nigeria to guide operations in the dairy value chain’’

 Abubakar also mentioned  that 13 milk collection centers are already on ground in seven states including Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gobme, Kwara, Niger and Plateau States that are ready to be handed over to private operators in order to increase productivity for local milk demand.

He highlighted further achievement of the FG in this animals sub sector to include capacity building on pasture production, processing and conservations in 2 locations in Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe States. 

Others achievement are " extablishment of 90ha commercial pasture plots with six transportation equipment and 6 grass choppers for two locations each in Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe States.

He reminded the audience at the briefing of the upcoming world milk day with the theme  " sustainable dairy: Good for the planet, Good for you, adding that issue relating to standard productivity with climate smart practices would be among the things to be discussed on the celebration day slated for June 1.
