Monkey-pox: Minister cautions eating bush meat

 



The Minister, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) Dr. Mohammad  Abubakar Abubakar has advised Nigerians against eating bush meat  to avoid being infected by monkey-pox disease, that is currently in Europe and America. 


The Minister, Dr. Mohammad Abubakar said this yesterday at the press conference held yesterday at the conference room, FMARD, Area 11, Abuja.


Abubakar counseled Nigerians to abstain from wide markets that could exposed them to being infected by monkey pox disease, saying " we are ready to prevent it, and we will do everything humanly possible that the disease do not enter Nigeria"


He said that " Our Quarantine Service is one of our strategic agencies being strengthened in terms of staffing, and is everywhere in the major airports, and other points of entry, and we are doing everything humanly possible even before the monkey pox, the number staff that will be policing our borders, and that is being done"


The Minister assured Nigerians of safety measures against the disease spread in the country, stressed that his ministry in collaboration with other Government agencies are already working assiduously to intensify surveillance in the animals population at the point of entry for wildlife, and as _well_ creating awareness among communities on prevention of the disease.
